@MGCentre’s Shramdaan for ‪#‎SwachhBharat‬

It was a memorable day for all of us at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Sanitation, Cleanliness and Community Health.

Our volunteers were in full force at the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST – previously VT) Railway Station in Mumbai well before the stipulated time of 9 am to join the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) campaign by doing ‘Shramdaan’ (donation of manual labour).

CST is India’s oldest railway station. This is where the railway system was born in India in 1853.

CST is a UNSECO World Heritage Site.

CST is ranked the ‘Second Most Spectacular Railway Station in the World’.

Yet, it is a station that ranks very low on the parameter of cleanliness. CST is no exception. Indeed, the entire Indian Railways system performs very poorly on the criterion of cleanliness.

Why only the railway system, India as a whole fares very very poorly on the test of cleanliness.

Therefore, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi deserves hearty congratulations for launching the Swachh Bharat campaign to make India Clean by 2019.

He has rightly said that this mission cannot succeed if it remain a sarkari programme. IT MUST BECOME A MASS MOVEMENT, just as Mahatma Gandhi made India’s Freedom Struggle a mighty mass movement.

What a worthy tribute it would be to the Father of the Nation if we can make India Clean by 2019, the year of his 150th birth anniversary!

Here are a few images of our Shramdaan today.

For us at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre, SWACHH BHARAT is not a one-day ritualistic activity.

We shall make our HANDS DIRTY again and again and again, just as Mahatma Gandhi did.

I am proud of all my young colleagues at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre. Incredible enthusiasm. Soaring commitment. Overflowing youthful energy.

If we can unleash the patriotic energy of India of millions of our young women and men, SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAN WILL UNDOUBTEDLY SUCCEED.

And the FOUL STENCH ON INDIA’S SWARAJ WILL BE REMOVED!
